CAGD202- Successful and unsuccessful outcomes for the design project

Completing this major project I came across 2 successful outcome that our team manage to achieve the first being:

  1. The navigation = the original website was complex in content and depth with many confusing links and navigation options for the user to use. Our re-design had provided the website to function and provide easy navigation for the user, taking on board the points mentioned from Lynch and Horton (2011). The new site Travel South had consistent navigation, which enabled the user to become familiar with the layout so they became more aware of where they were located on the page and how to go back to where they were previously. Using the clear, consistent icons, breadcrumbs and a drop down menu that was carried through the whole design. By making this observation and requiring this particular skill and knowledge will help me when approaching future projects in the future. To apply this knowledge when creating or designing a site for future project that needs to think about how to use navigation in order to organize and provide functionality for the user of the page.
  2. Use of White Space= Our site has managed to incorporate the right amount of white space needed for the pages within the site. As Lynch and Horton suggest use “white space to avoid crowding the edges “(2011). With our site we had vast amount of content and information that needed to be on one page, we wanted to provide a visual rest for the reader of the site, where they didn’t feel overwhelmed with the different elements happening on the page. I believe this was successful in are redesign. By making this observation and requiring this particular skill and knowledge will help me when approaching future projects in the future, to think about the practically of white space in design and how this can add to the visual appeal of a site or design.

Completing this major project we came across 2 unsuccessful outcomes those being:

  1. The Colours of the heading: throughout the whole design we chose to write our heading in the colour of white. Though this proved to be a challenge when placing the text over certain images where the word would get lost or blurred. Particularly in the background of the picture and the white foreground. This element was unsuccessful, as it doesn’t provide a good design solution for the design interface. Because it is important when you want to create a site that your headings and text is readable for your viewers. Making this observation will help me in approaching future projects to pay particular attention to detail within a design to make sure that everyone can read my work.
  2. Difficulties containing information: When creating the website for Travel South we found it difficult to show all the information given to be displayed on one page. We found it difficult to contain the information without making the page   seem cluttered with images, texts, heading and other design elements essential for a webpage. The result of this saw our design solution not providing all information needed to gain an understanding of the topic whether that be entertainment or attractions, specially when comparing our structure to a tourism website that has the essential information needed. The unsuccessful design saw our readers having to search further into our site going through multiple layers to get the information they needed. Especially if they didn’t know what to search for using the search tool. This observation has informed me to pay more attention to detail and page structure to create a simple and easy design, which will help me in my approach to future projects.
